ABOUT US

AAUW is a national organization that advances education and equity for  all women and girls.  It is a 100,000-member organization with more than 1,500 branches nationwide that lobbies and advocates for education and equity.

The Taunton Area Branch was established in 1933, growing over the years into a strong branch with a current membership of about forty. Members include student affiliate members and honorary life members.

Our activities support and promote the Mission of AAUW:  Advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research.

The branch is affiliated with AAUW-MA.

The Taunton Area Branch holds its regular meetings monthly from October through May on the second Wednesday of the month unless noted otherwise in the newsletter.  All branch meetings are open to the public. In May, with an elegant Tea Ceremony, we celebrate Remarkable Young Women from 6 area high schools and a junior or senior college student who is the  recipient of the Mary Anderson Memorial Scholarship Fund. We hold a yard sale in June as fundraiser for our local scholarships and enjoy an International Dinner in August.    See Branch Officers and membership information elsewhere on this page.

THE MARY ANDERSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Each year, the Branch offers a scholarship to a local woman entering her junior or senior year of college. Criteria include academic performance, motivation, and an expressed commitment to women in the community and in the world.   The Branch-sponsored Women's History Month Concert in March is the primary fundraiser for the Mary Anderson Memorial Scholarship.

This award is named for Mary Anderson ( on right), lifetime branch member (d. 2002).

EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION AND LEGAL ADVOCACY FUND

The AAUW Educational Foundation--the world's largest source of funding exclusively for graduate women--supports aspiring scholars around the globe, teachers and activists in local communities, women at critical stages of their careers, and those pursuing professions where women are underrepresented.

The Branch supports the Foundation's effort to promote scholarship and equity in academia through various fundraising activities. At the December meeting, a National or International Graduate Fellow is invited to share her work with branch members. Funds raised during our Silent Auction in November and through the sale of Poinsettia plants in December, are primarily for the Educational Foundation (EF) and Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF). The AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund provides funding and a support system for women seeking judicial redress for sex discrimination.

MEMBERSHIP

AAUW membership is open to all who hold an associate, baccalaureate or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university.  Students may  become AAUW affiliate members.  We welcome a diverse membership.
