BRANCH MEETING

On February 14 at 7:00 PM we will meet at the Hingham High School Library where we will be addressed by two representatives from the Lane Center in Norwell. They will speak about alternative health practices and remedies. They also hope to have a volunteer to demonstrate acupuncture techniques. In addition they will talk about alternative remedies for some of our common everyday ailments.

This should be an interesting evening for everyone, and there will be a healthful snack for all to enjoy.

Call Jane Moore with any questions, or e-mail jcrmoore@comcast.net

PRESIDENT’S LETTER

What a pleasure to once again be able to write, ‘Welcome, new member!” Thanks to an invitation from Sondra Schmidt, our newest member Mary Devlin came to our January book discussion evening and joined soon thereafter. Welcome! Thanks to Priscilla Johnsen, Patricia McKay and Allison Marshall for organizing a delicious dinner and stimulating book discussion.

Have you ever wondered whether you might benefit from acupuncture? Have you ever seen it done, live? Jane Moore has invited two professionals from Norwell’s Lane Center for Alternative Healing to teach us about and to demonstrate traditional and innovative alternative healing techniques. What a perfect focus for a midwinter meeting. Note change of venue to Hingham High School.

If you are free on Saturday February 3rd, you can still register to attend the State Winter Meeting at Bridgewater State College. The highlight of the day is expected to be the presence of Sheriff Andrea Cabral, Suffolk County House of Correction, who will be part of a panel about Campus Sexual Harassment and Assault. For more information, visit: www.aauw-ma.org. Hollie Bagley is the registrar, so if you don’t have e-mail and want to go, call her at: 781-749-6274. The cost is $25 for the day, including breakfast and lunch.

We hope to see you at one of our activities this month!                          Kay

Help Wanted – Corresponding Secretary:

We have a ‘nice little job’ (as Hollie has been saying for years)…. We need someone to fill this role. We occasionally need someone to write notes and cards on behalf of the branch. This has become important more as our branch continues to grow. We also need help printing out and mailing the BayStater newsletters to those who can’t receive them by e-mail. If you can help us out, please call Kay at 781-740-0788 or call: kaycam@aol.com. The newsletter only comes out three times a year, and only five or six copies have to be mailed. If you’re interested in getting involved on the board and don’t have a lot of time, this is a perfect way to start.

Problems Receiving E-Mail BayStater?

Hollie Bagley is the editor and creator of the BayStater newsletter. The first e-mail edition went out recently, and we know that some members had trouble opening the PDF attachment. If you could not open the newsletter attachment in PDF format, can you please let me know. We apologize that it appears the problem hasn’t been resolved for several of you. As per the above ‘help wanted’ announcement, we want to make sure you can get it. We’ll get you a ‘snail mail’ copy. In any case, please contact Kay Campbell: 781-740-0788, or e-mail kaycam@aol.com.  We (and Hollie) need to know who never got it so we can fix the problem! Thanks for your patience while we iron out this new way of delivering the newsletter.

National Convention – Phoenix in July!

The upcoming national convention in Phoenix will be landmark event, where many key issues critical to AAUW’s future will be discussed and voted on. We will be electing two delegates to vote on our branch’s behalf. If you are planning to go to convention and are interested in being a delegate, please contact Kay Campbell: 781-740-0788, or e-mail: kaycam@aol.com.  The branch will pay the registration fee of our delegates. We will elect the delegates at our March board meeting. Interested in learning more about the convention? Visit: www.aauw.org. By the way, you don’t have to be a delegate to attend!

Save the Date – May Banquet Date Changed!

We have rescheduled the May Banquet to May 15thplace and time to be announced

WRITER’S GROUP

Our next meeting will be on February 15, 2007, at the home of Kay Campbell.  We always welcome new writers, so if you’re interested in attending please call Patricia McKay at 781-337-3375 for the writing assignment

GIRLS’ GAME NIGHT

Sharon Lemoff will host the next game night at her home on Tuesday, February 20th at 7PM. Call her at 781-749-3734 (e-mail: slemoff@hrblock.com) to RSVP..

ADVENTURES IN DINING

After closing down Fujiyama late on one of the coldest nights of the year, we are planning on driving north on Route 53 for our next rendezvous to El Sarape, the Zagat-rated Mexican restaurant in Weymouth Landing. We’ll meet there at 6:30PM on Thursday, March 1st. Call or e-mail Kay Campbell if you want to join us!  (781-740-0788 or kaycam@aol.com).

CLUTTER BUGS

The newly formed Special Interest Group, The Clutter-Bugs, will meet for the first time on Tuesday, January 30 at 4:30 pm at Panera’s at the Derby Street Shoppes.  The group is open to all branch members.  Please watch the calendar for future meetings.

PUBLIC POLICY

Celebrate Our Successes in 2006!

Through the advocacy of our nationwide network of e-activists; the AAUW Action Network, AAUW has helped make an impact on public policy issues throughout 2006. The growing power and reach of this network can claim some impressive achievements. Just consider that over the past year, together, we have:

• Convinced the House and Senate to reauthorize the Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act, with improved provisions for women and girls.
• Helped defeat several attempts to repeal the estate tax, and told the truth about the impact of continued budget and tax cuts on services critical to women and girls, especially education programs.
• Turned out the women’s vote by sending reminder e-cards celebrating Women’s Equality Day, and others urging women to register to vote and to go to the polls on Election Day. Action Network also ensured the distribution of AAUW’s Woman-to-Woman Voter Turnout Guide, resulting in voter education programs across the country.
• Held members of Congress accountable using the AAUW Congressional Voting Record. Action Network members thanked members of Congress who scored well for their support of AAUW priority issues, and the AAUW Capitol Hill Lobby Corps hand-delivered voting records and thank you notes to all members scoring 80 percent or above.
• Increased awareness of the wage gap between men and women through programming based on AAUW’s Pay Equity Resource Kit and forwarding Equal Pay Day e-cards across the country.
• Supported successful efforts to pass the reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act, holding true to AAUW’s suffragette past and the conviction that all citizens should have the right to vote free from intimidation and discrimination.
• Protected the United States Constitution by ensuring that discrimination was not codified in the most sacred democratic document by defeating the Federal Marriage Amendment. AAUW was founded at a time when women were relegated to second-class status and addressing that injustice has been at the heart of our mission ever since.
• Successfully advocated for the passage of the South Dakota ballot initiative, which overturned a state law that would have banned all abortions, making no exceptions even in cases of rape, incest or the health of the mother.
• Persuaded the Food and Drug Administration to finally approve over-the-counter sale of emergency contraception to women after years of political delays.
• Ensured that proposed “Sunset Commissions,” which likely would have cut critical social programs outside the democratic process, were not advanced within the House and Senate.
• Helped to kick off AAUW’s 125th anniversary celebrations, recognizing a 125 year legacy of leadership.

AAUW urges you to resolve in the New Year to help others speak their mind, too! Help Action Network grow and be even more of a force in our nation’s capital. Urge your friends and family to join AAUW and AAUW’s Action Network today!  You can enter their e-mail addresses to send them an invitation to join at http://capwiz.com/aauw/taf/ .

MEMBERSHIP MATTERS

Please welcome our newest member:  Mary G. Devlin

New member Sondra Schmidt invited Mary to our January meeting and Mary joined shortly afterward.  Thank you, Sondra!

We are now into the second phase of this year’s Member-Get-A-Member Campaign.  Although we are far from our goal of 100% participation we are proud the Hingham Area Branch has four members listed in the national Hall of Fame on the Association website.  Please continue to spread the word about AAUW and to bring guests to our programs.  In order for a prospective member to take the step to join us, she must have the tools to make an informed decision.  Encourage prospective members to learn more about AAUW by visiting the Association website (www.aauw.org) and our branch web page (http://www.aauw-ma.org/Hingham%202005/index.htm).  Use our new mission statement as your two-minute elevator speech when someone asks you, “AAUW, what’s that?”  AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education and research.  Invite your prospective member to an AAUW event.  Let her see first-hand who our members are.  We will do the rest by inviting her to join.

Chit Chat:  2006 closed on a very happy note with the birth of Neal Emmet Doherty on December 31st, son of member Julie Doherty and grandson of Sheila Doherty.  The January/February 2007 issue of Saudi Aramco World features an article written by Kay Hardy Campbell.  “Effat’s New Roses,” is a wonderful profile of Saudi Arabia’s first private women’s college.  You may read the article at www.saudiaramcoworld.com or download a pdf version at http://www.kayhardycampbell.com/effatcollegesaw.pdf.  Congratulations, Kay!  We are proud to know you.  After January’s meeting it should be mandatory to bring the recipe for your gourmet creation.  How about it, Ginny and Allison, can we get the recipes for those delicious soups?  What about that fabulous German potato salad and the cranberry salsa?  Our members really know their way around the kitchen. It was so good to see Priscilla Johnsen and to be shocked to learn she is now the grandmother of six grandchildren.  How time flies!  How about we search for the member with the most grandkids?  Send your number to Hollie.  Our best wishes for a speedy recovery go to Heather Gregory’s mother who is recovering from heart surgery.  We send our deepest sympathy to Sandy Pierson on the passing of her father on January 16, 2007. May he rest in peace.
