PRESIDENT’S LETTER

What a delightful brunch Sheila Doherty organized at Atlantica to celebrate the holidays….replete with Christmas crackers on the table and a view of picturesque Cohasset Harbor. Thanks for organizing it, Sheila, and thanks to all who attended.

The New Year is upon us at last, and we have a busy and interesting January planned on the South Shore, to be followed by an intriguing State Meeting in early February at nearby Bridgewater State College. I hope you can manage to read The Women of the Silk in time for our dinner/book discussion at Derby Academy; it’s a fascinating story and should spark some good conversation.

Last year was a stellar one for our branch in terms of membership growth, outstanding branch programs, and increased visibility. This is due to the work of so many dedicated members, who share their great ideas, check their e-mail several times a day and fire off encouraging e-mails and make phone calls as they get things done. Thank you, fast-acting and cheerful women of the Hingham Area Branch. You are super-stars!

We’re at the point in the year where we are beginning to think about officers for the coming term of office starting in June. We would love to hear new voices on the board – whether from long-time members or new members. We need and value your input. Why not consider a board position?

Be sure to come in from the cold and join us this month!

“Warmly….”Kay

AAUW-MA Winter Conference

Saturday, February 3, 2007

Bridgewater State College

Campus Center, Small Ballroom

This AAUW mission-based Winter Conference will take place at Bridgewater State College on Saturday February 3, 2007.  It takes a two-pronged approach to the relationship between AAUW and College/University Campuses.  First, we will briefly review Drawing the Line: Sexual Harassment on Campus, which was presented more fully at the 2006 Spring Convention.  We will use Drawing the Line as a background for a panel discussion about sexual harassment and sexual assault and college reactions to/prevention efforts for those crimes on Massachusetts campuses. A stellar array of women from a variety of professional viewpoints will bring us their expertise.

In the afternoon, we will have an interactive discussion with campus representatives from several colleges/universities throughout the Commonwealth about how AAUW Branches and the Colleges/Universities partnership can be more mutually supportive.  Of course, from an AAUW standpoint, the Colleges/Universities are a wonderful membership recruitment pool.  The trick is how to engage the Colleges/Universities in a way that is supportive of them but not overwhelming to the Branches.  There is a way!!!! and this will be the beginning of a discussion that will lead us to it.

Please invite your friends, associates and colleagues from campuses throughout the Commonwealth to join us in this thought provoking, motivating and important Winter Conference.  We will nourish your winter-chilled physical being with hot coffee, tea, cocoa and soup while stimulating you with ideas and challenges to heat you up intellectually and emotionally!  See you there!

AAUW STRATEGIC PROCESS UPDATE

As you know, the Association has been undertaking a strategy realignment.  The following message from AAUW’s President Anne Sweetzer and Educational Foundation President Barbara O’Connor is an update on that process. If you want to read more about the process and add your feedback, please visit  http://www.aauw.org/member center/leader comer/strategic pp2006.cfm

Message from Ruth Sweetzer and Barbara O’Connor

We have started the next phase of strategic process work to build a viable and relevant organization.  Focus will continue on some of the key issues identified as critical opportunities and obstacles for AAUW’s future:

§         Vision Focus

§         Membership

§         Organizational Structure and Governance

§         Internal Communications

§         Due Diligence

The Communications Campaign goal is to develop and share a compelling, consistent message about AAUW’s mission and how it will be achieved. We have engaged a consultant, Dr. Sherry Schiller, Schiller Center, to guide the Communications Campaign through the Convention in June.  Task Forces for the campaign will include members of both AAUW and Educational Foundation boards, regional directors, state leaders, members and staff.

One of the primary results we expect to achieve is an informed, membership which supports the proposed organizational restructuring needed to realize our new mission.  Each of the task forces, as well as other working groups, will have a part helping this short term goal to be realized at the June Convention.

Vision Focus:  Audrey Salgado(Chair), Faye Dykstra, Sharon Gomez, Pam Thiel, (Staff:)  Gloria Blackwell and Lisa Maatz
Membership:  Ann Gustafson and Jennifer Wilken(Co-Chairs), Alice Bartelt, Linda Conger, Lynne Roney, Christine Schmitz, Mardy Stevens, Linda Tozier; (Staff:)Christy Jones and Seth Chase.

Organizational Structure & Governance:  Florine Swanson(Chair), Shirley Breeze, Sally Chamberlain, Lynn Fountain, Ronni Nivala, Nancy Shoemaker; Staff: Executive Office

Internal Communications & Rollout:  Leslie Henderson (Chair); Betty Bayless, Diana Campo, Terri Griffiths, Ronni Nivala (125th Consultant), Joanne Stern, Ann Terry; (Staff:)Ashley Carr

Due Diligence:  Linda Bors, Sally Little; (Staff:)Michele Wetherald

Please keep updated on the strategic initiatives, including the recently added Joint Boards’ Report, dated Oct. 31, 2006

We continue to value your participation and input.  http://www.aauw.org/member_center/leader_corner/strategic_pp2006.cfm

MEMBERSHIP MATTERS

Happy New Year Everyone!  We are pleased to announce that we are starting off the new year with a new member—Anne Lynch.  Anne was recruited by Pat Bologna.  Pat mentioned AAUW a “few times” and invited Anne to attend some of our meetings.  It is the simple strategy on which the Member-Get-A-Member campaign is based.  Now is the time to put your recruitment strategy to work.  From January 1 through March 15,  AAUW membership is half-price on all levels.  And combine half-price with the Shape the Future discount available when one joins at an AAUW mission driven event such as the February 3rd state conference, it’s a bargain hard to resist.  Do you need more incentives?  Read over the Member Benefits found on the AAUW website, choose your favorites and start spreading the word.  No access to the Internet, just browse through your Hingham Area Branch 2006-2007 Membership Directory (yellow cover), an idea or two is bound to strike you.  As has been proven time and again, the personal touch is always best when recruiting new members.  Be sure to tell potential members why you are a member.  Thank you for helping us fulfill our personal goal:  to announce at least one new branch member each month.  Please extend a warm welcome to Anne and add her contact information to your directory:  Anne M. Lynch

Chit Chat:   We hope you are all recovering from a busy, yet joyous holiday season. It could be that at least 18 of us will have to make a New Year’s Resolution concerning food consumption.  What a feast we had at the holiday brunch!  The conversation was as rich and varied as the menu.  Thank you, Sheila for a wonderful event that nourished both the body and the soul.  The same could be said for the November Adventures in Dining. In attendance were two former Recognition Award winners, Annie Schlesinger, daughter of Fran Schlesinger, and Lauren Doherty, daughter of Sheila Doherty.  Lauren accompanied her sister-in-law, new member Julie Doherty. It was Julie’s first AAUW event since joining. Julie, a full-time working mother expecting her second child in January, teaches yoga on Tuesday nights making it difficult for her to attend branch meetings.  It was truly exciting to learn of the appointment of Suzanne Bump to Gov. Patrick’s Cabinet as Secretary of Labor.  Suzanne is a former member of the Hingham Area Branch and served as Program VP for several terms.  Suzanne definitely shares our AAUW values, so let’s hope she can help to change Massachusetts “one woman at a time.”  As she said, “I look forward to working with Gov.-elect Patrick to develop a well-prepared work force, harmonious workplace and a thriving economy.”  Go Girl!!

CLUTTER BUGS

It is not too late to make a New Year’s Resolution to get rid of clutter.  Our newly formed Interest Group might be just the help you need to get started.  We will hold our first meeting in January.  If interested in joining or learning more about the group, contact Hollie Bagley (HollieBagley@gmail.com or 781 749-6274).

GIRLS GAME NIGHT

The next Girls Game Night will be held on Wednesday, January 24 at 7pm at Sandy Carle’s home in Weymouth.  All are welcome to attend.  The evening is filled with good food, good company and lots of laughter.  Please RSVP to Sandy (scarle12@aol.com or 781 340-6281) if you plan to come.  Do something fun for yourself in the new year.

ADVENTURES IN DINING

We had a great time at our November dinner at Sweet Lemons in Weymouth. Next, we’ll continue our Route 53 odyssey on January 25th, sampling Japanese cuisine in Norwell at Fujiyama, at 434 Washington Street. There’s nothing like a little hot sake on a winter’s night, so welcome, or should I say kam pai? If you’re interested in joining us please contact Kay.  kaycam@aol.com or 781-740-0788

WRITER’S GROUP

Our next meeting will be on January 18, 2007, at the home of Kay Campbell.  We always welcome new writers, so if you’re interested in attending please call Patricia McKay at 781-337-3375 for the writing assignment.
