President’s Letter

Please join us at the banquet on May 15th at Quincy’s Common Market. It will be a wonderful time to celebrate what you have done to make the Hingham Area Branch a real success story. We’ve excelled in so many areas; and we deserve to toast ourselves! We’ll also discuss the topics that are going to be raised at national convention that might require a branch vote in advance.  RSVP to Sheila Doherty (781-848-8122 or e-mail: sheilad1234@usadatanet.net).

Thank you, Patricia McKay and your Recognition Award Committee, for selecting this year’s honoree, Catherine Marshall of Hingham High School. It is always exciting to see a young woman about to launch her college career. Congratulations and best of luck to Catherine!

The incoming Program Committee needs your ideas and help in organizing the slate of programs for next year. The benefits of planning and organizing a branch meeting? You get to invite a speaker or address a topic that you think is important, and to present those ideas to the public on the South Shore. If you’ve got an idea or two, and might be willing to help organize a meeting, please let our Program VP’s Jane Moore or Diane Morash know. They will be scheduling a program planning meeting this summer so they can begin to make your ideas a reality. Doing a program helps AAUW on many fronts. It brings topics of interest to the community at large while giving our branch great media exposure and attracting new members.

Our incoming leadership team, led by Sheila Doherty, is going to be fabulous. Let’s all support them to help the branch continue to flourish!  If you haven’t already, please fill out the enclosed form about how you can help in the effort, and send it in with your dues. And….speaking of dues, if you haven’t renewed yet, please do so. If you prefer to procrastinate, then you can always bring a check with you to the banquet.

It has been a real honor and a pleasure serving the branch as president during this exciting time; to have worked with the talented women on our board and in our branch. Thank you for all your marvelous ideas, consistent support and your enthusiasm for AAUW.

I look forward to seeing everyone on the 15th; and if you can’t make it, have a wonderful summer!

Kay Campbell

MEMBERSHIP MATTERS

The Hingham Area Branch has had a phenomenal membership year.  We trace it back to a Saturday morning in June at Notre Dame when we came together as a branch to formulate a strategic plan.  We recognized that something needed to be done to revitalize the branch.  Since then we have all worked very hard as a team to build membership through program, visibility and outreach.  Unfortunately we cannot sit back on our laurels and bask in the glory.  Membership growth will always be a 24/7 responsibility.  We thank all who have contributed to our membership growth and urge you to continue to spread the good word about AAUW.  Start thinking now whom you will invite to Pot Luck.  Shape the Future and the Member-Get-A-Member initiatives will continue next year.  And don’t forget—graduation is just around the corner.  Give every grad you know a FREE membership in AAUW simply by going to http://svc.aauw.org/join/gradgift.cfml and enrolling them through the Give-A-Grad-A-Gift program.  The state and most branches will waive the dues for GGG members.  Be sure to let our branch know whom you enrolled.

Once again we have the privilege to welcome a new member to our branch.  Judith Gabbe, a New Jersey transplant to our branch, recruited Florence Van Leuvan, an AAUW member for over 30 years, who has moved to Linden Ponds.  Judith invited Florence to our April branch meeting, and Florence joined that very night.  Please extend a warm welcome to Florence whom you will meet at the May Banquet; and say thanks to Judith who will be there also.

“Thanks for the members!”                                                                                         Hollie and Sheila

On a personal note, I would like to publicly thank Sheila Doherty for all she has done for membership. She will claim it was “little” but I know better.  I couldn’t have done it without you, girl!    Patricia, I welcome you with open arms.  You have large shoes to fill.                                             Hollie

Chit Chat: Congratulations are in order.  First, to Fran and Mark Schlesinger.  Son Peter was inducted into the National Honor Society the evening of our April meeting.  Fran, we forgive you for missing the branch meeting.  Next, to Cathy Barnes.  Cathy became a grandmother for the first time with the arrival of Myles Mangan on April 1st.  And third, to Allison Marshall whose daughter, Catherine, won this year’s Pamela Lincoln Recognition Award.  You all remember Marathon week—the Monsoon week.  Sheila spent it on the beach in Hilton Head, but she did call to remind me to send the membership column!  Who else was lucky enough to escape?  We’d love to hear about your travels.  By the time you read this Hollie will have been to Nashville and back and Pat Bologna to Philadelphia.  Kay will be in California the weekend of our May Convention to attend the wedding of her nephew.

Reminder:  Send your dues check and volunteer choices to Ginny Giordano now while you are thinking about it.  The dues bill was in last month’s News of Note and is in this issue, too.

The Clutter-Bugs have officially renamed themselves the Declutter-Bugs in honor of the progress they have made.  The group will meet on Wednesday, May 2nd at 4:30 pm in Panera’s at the Derby Street Shoppes.  Tentatively they are planning a yard sale for the fall, so even if you don’t meet with us, you might think about what you would contribute to the event.

Girls Game Night will be on Tuesday, May 8th at the home of Sharon Lemoff.  April’s meeting welcomed new member Catherine Schindewolf to the group of fun-loving gamers.  New faces are always welcome, so if you need a relaxing evening out with the girls, Girls Game Night might hit the spot.  Let Sharon (SLemoff@ hrblock.com or 781 749-3734) know if you plan to attend.  It’s a toss-up whether we play more games or eat more snacks, but all agree we have fun.

AAUW Media Coverage Reaches New Highs with Release of Pay Gap Research

When the AAUW Educational Foundation released the research report, Behind the Pay Gap on April 23, AAUW received tremendous media attention from print, broadcast, and online media across the country, and even in some outlets abroad.  AAUW was able to secure three of the biggest wire services to cover the story: The Associated Press, Reuters, and Bloomberg. Their stories were picked up by numerous outlets across the country. In addition to the AP, Reuters, and Bloomberg stories, about 148 original print, online, and broadcast pieces were published or aired*.  The coverage continues to roll in, but here is a summary to date:

Total readership for print stories reached more than 30 million* as of April 27.

Volunteers Needed to Honor the 2007 MCSW Unsung Heroines

COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN

THE CHARLES F. HURLEY BUILDING,

19 STANIFORD ST. 6TH FLOOR

BOSTON, MA 02114

Lois Pulliam of AAUW’s Bedford-Lexington Branch is one of the Honorees…AAUW members are invited to volunteer during the day. See below for info on how to get involved.

On Wednesday, May 16 the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women will honor 268 Unsung Heroines from across the Commonwealth at a celebration to be held at the MA State House. In order to make this day as special as possible for the honorees the event committee has put together a wonderful program, one which allows for individual recognition and a large communal celebration.

The heroines being honored are mentors, volunteers and innovators. These women are the glue that keeps a community together and the spark that gets things started and gets things done. Most importantly, they care about others and it is evident in their everyday actions.

We hope that you will consider joining with us to honor the unsung heroines and their contributions by volunteering your time. It will be a joyous celebration, but one that will require the support of a large volunteer team. We’ll need volunteers for various assignments from 8:00 – 4:00 on Wednesday, May 16.

If you or other members of your organization are available and interested please contact Jill Ashton at 617-626-6525 or Jill.Ashton@state.ma.us. Please forward to anyone who might be interested!

Thank you!

VOLUNTEER SIGN-UP SHEET

Text Box: We need youSpring is the time to start thinking of the Fall.  As the AAUW year winds down for the summer, we have to begin planning for another AAUW year.  There is much that goes into making this branch function and grow.  We need every member’s help.  Enclosed in this month’s newsletter is a list of volunteer tasks that run the gamut from “a nice little job” to an elected office.  As a new slate of officers begins to plan, they need to know who is willing to do what.  Look over the list and think about how you can contribute to your branch.  Send in your top three choices with your dues.  There is space on the bottom of the dues bill.  If you are already volunteering for a job listed, please indicate you are willing to continue.  We need you, but wanted others to know many of the tasks necessary for the operation of the branch.  New members, we need you.  We train and we mentor and we have fun.  Veteran members, we need you, too.  Maybe the time is finally right for you to “give back” to the branch.  We recognize that everyone’s time is valuable, so the more volunteers we have, the less time all of us have to spend.  Take a risk—volunteer.  You won’t regret it!

Our branch needs your support.  Many hands make light work.  Look at the list below and decide how you can help.  You may choose more than one way.  Each bullet is a separate task.  If you already serve in one of these capacities and are willing to continue, please indicate such.  If you need more information about what is involved, ask Hollie, Kay or Sheila.  Please return your top three choices with your dues payment.
