Branch Meeting

Does this scene look familiar?  Let’s hope not, but, if we are like most Americans, we have some type of “clutter” that needs to be addressed.  As busy women and leaders we don’t have time to let clutter slow us down.  The November branch meeting will deal with the topic of clutter:  How to Declutter Our Space and Our Minds.  The guest speaker will be Patricia McPherson, a professional organizer who will discuss what clutter is, types of clutterers, why we should organize, and practical organizing tips, followed by specific questions or issues from the audience. As owner of Orderly Manner (www.OrderlyManor.com), Patty also writes and speaks about organizing and has been featured in local newspapers. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Management, an MBA, and is a teacher and homemaker.  We hope to see you on November 14 in the Whiton Room of the Hingham Public Library, 66 Leavitt Street, Hingham.   Please arrive by 7 PM so that we will have lots of time for questions and answers.

President’s Letter

Happy Birthday AAUW – We are celebrating our 125th year. In November 1881, a group of sixteen women met at the home of Marion Talbot in Boston and formed what eventually became AAUW. They were among America’s first women college graduates and found they were not only in desperate need of mutual support, they also wanted to smooth the way for other women who were seeking college degrees, still a controversial concept in 1881. On the AAUW website, www.aauw.org, you can find an excellent article from the Spring/Summer AAUW Outlook, entitled “Founding Mothers” by Jean-Marie Navetta.

No matter where you stand on things, you have to admit we’ve got a fascinating election this year. The gubernatorial race and the ballot questions are intriguing, and of course having a woman candidate for governor adds a lot of spice to the mix. AAUW is urging everyone to get out and vote. It’s easy to add one’s voice to that idea – so please vote and encourage your friends to do the same.

We look forward to meeting all the new members at the New Member Tea which Cathy Barnes will be hosting in her new house in Hull on November 4th from 2-4 PM. With more than 15 new members joining in the last couple of years, it promises to be a lot of fun and I hope we get a good showing. It’s a great way for you to get to know each other, and for us to learn more about you.

Charity Night at the Hanover Mall takes place on November 12th. I hope many of you can make it. You really can pick up bargains and make headway with your holiday shopping. Remember the cost of your tickets goes directly to EF and LAF.

With the New Member Tea, a great branch meeting, a fundraiser, and the interest group activities, this is one of our busiest months of the year. I hope you can take part in some of the fun, and of course, don’t forget to vote!

                                                                                                            Kay

Adventures in Dining

Following our wonderfully spicy lunch at the Indian Delight, the dining group is continuing what appears to be a ‘Route 53 Cuisine’ theme. Don’t laugh! It is amazing what diverse ethnic cuisine you can find on Route 53….Next, we will meet at Sweet Lemons in Weymouth. This popular Thai restaurant has been getting rave reviews from diners all over the area. Join us on November 30th at 6:30PM.  Please RSVP to kaycam@aol.com or 781-740-0788 if you can make it. This is a relaxed group and we are always looking for more adventurous diners. Sweet Lemons is a small place and we will need to reserve a table. Please let me know by November 26th if you can come. - Kay

Writer’s Group:

We will meet at the Café at the Barnes & Noble at Hingham’s Derby Shoppes on November 16th at

7:30 PM. If you’re interested in joining us (we always welcome aspiring writers or those who are just curious about how a writing group works) please contact Patricia McKay at: 781-337-3375. She’ll fill you in on our next ‘assignment.’

Book Discussion Group

The book selected for discussion at the January branch meeting is Woman of the Silk by Gail Tsukiyama.  If it is not available at your town library it can be purchased at most bookstores. Buy one for yourself or for a friend as a present.  The holidays are coming!

Recognition Award

To receive an application for the Pamela J Lincoln Recognition Award contact Patricia McKay at 781-337-3375.  Any branch member may submit a candidate.  The candidate should be a woman  (high school or college) who is pursuing her education and has shown outstanding academic achievement and community service.  Applications are due March 1, 2007

Membership Matters

On November 28, 1881, Marion Talbot and Ellen H. Richards invited 15 other women who had college degrees to a meeting in Boston to discuss creating an organization where women would join together to open the doors of higher education to other women and to find greater opportunities to use their training. Their organization was formally organized in 1882 with 65 members.  What better way to celebrate AAUW’s 125th anniversary than to invite a prospective member to join?  Bring a guest or two to our November 14th program and we will do the rest.  We will offer them the Shape the Future discount if they “join on the spot.”  So far the Hingham Area Branch has three members in the Member-Get-A-Member Hall of Fame.  Wouldn’t it be great to see more names listed?

If you can’t make the meeting on the 14th, you might consider inviting a prospective member to “afternoon tea” on November 4th at Cathy Barnes’ home in Hull. Invitations have gone out to our 16 new (in the past two years) members.  We want to get to know them a little better in a warm, friendly, social environment as well as to have some fun introducing AAUW in a relaxed atmosphere.

Please extend a warm welcome to our newest member:

            Carol Sullivan-Hanley

Carol joined AAUW as a member at large and then found our branch through reading about us.

Chit chat:  Not much time for chit chat this month.  Hollie and Sheila are too busy traveling.  Sheila spent three weeks in Ireland and Hollie toured northern Italy’s lake country.  At least two of our members will become grandmothers in 2007.  See if you can guess who by the twinkle in their eyes.  Wasn’t if great to see so many of our new members at the October program?  And it is always a pleasure to see Ruth Powell.  This month’s travel award goes to Sue Pace who seems to commute between Braintree and Florida.  We send our best wishes to Ted Lemoff for a speedy recovery from recent surgery.
