President’s Letter

Our branch members are a fairly well traveled bunch. At our last holiday gathering at Hollie’s house, we heard some amazing travel stories from our fellows, things like surviving hurricanes in Mexico, and biking along the canals in Germany. We should be the perfect audience for our next branch meeting about travel and learning, by an Elderhostel Ambassador. Have you ever thought of taking a midsummer trip to visit Laplanders in northern Sweden? How about attending a mystery writer’s conference on a cruise ship, or going on a painting tour of missions in Mexico? Sound fascinating? Join us at the next branch meeting and find out about travel adventures that are all about enrichment and lifelong learning.

Thanks to all who made the 2006 Pot Luck such a success. You were such a lively group and the mixture of dishes was really fantastic. Who ever made the cold oriental noodle dish, care to share the recipe? Thanks in particular to those who brought guests, three of whom joined that night. Our guest speaker Patricia Ho was very impressed with all of you, particularly with how active you’ve been getting ready for what promises to be a really interesting year. Thanks especially to Sheila Doherty and her helpers Ruthanne Kennedy and Patricia McKay, to Jane Moore and Allison Marshall, and most of all to Hollie Bagley for valiantly pulling so much together over the summer. We missed you at the evening, Hollie, but knew you were having fun in Maine.

My family and I are honored and touched that you would name the EF contribution for 2006 in the name of my late mother, Dorothy Hanson, a long-time AAUW member most recently of Sun City West, AZ. She was always interested in what we were doing in our branch, and was active in her own branch. I thank you for that honor, and also for all the kind notes and wishes you’ve been sending my way.

A warm welcome to our new members!  We hope to see you often at our upcoming events, and we all look forward to getting to know you.

                                                                                                                                                                                                            Kay

Writer’s Group – Will meet Thursday, October 19th at 7:30 PM at the Barnes and Noble Café, Derby Shoppes in Hingham. If you are interested in attending, please contact Patricia McKay at 781-337-3375. She can fill you in on our ‘assignment’. First-time observers are welcome, as long as you contribute to the discussion!

Adventures in Dining – Join us for a lunch buffet at Weymouth’s Indian Delight. It’s a secret trove of superb Indian food right on Washington Street. We’ll meet there on Saturday, October 21st at 12:30 PM. Bring ideas for our next outings and we’ll try to plan our future forays. RSVP to Kay 781-740-0788 or kaycam@aol.com

Pamela J. Lincoln Recognition Award

This award is presented annually at our spring meeting.  Any member of our branch may nominate a candidate.  The qualifications are a woman (high school or college) of outstanding academic achievement and community service.
For applications contact Patricia McKay at the next meeting or call her at 781-337-3375.  Applications are due by
March 1, 2007.

Book Discussion

The book selected to be discussed at the branch meeting on January 9, 2007 is Women of the Silk by Gail Tsukiyama.
This book is set in rural
China from 1926 to World War II.  It centers on women  of various ages who form a sisterhood as they work in a silk factory.  Using the strength of their ambitions, dreams and friendships,  they lead a strike and achieve a sense of freedom that they could never have found on their own.
Women of the Silk  is available in paperback in most bookstores and at town libraries.

Fund Raising

We have two wonderful fundraisers for our Educational Foundation Fund and the Legal Advocacy Fund.

Each of our members will receive two tickets for the Hanover Mall Charity Night on November 12, 2006.  Each ticket is $5.00, from which we receive 100% profit for our funds.  Again, this is a painless but fun way to donate to our EF and LAF projects.  Our Educational Fund, which raises millions of dollars for graduate women, has made awards to 224 recipients this year.  These funds are for research, scholarships, community action, career development, and fellowships.
The Legal Advocacy Fund is the nation’s largest fund focused on discrimination on higher education campuses. LAF has provided over $1,000,000 to assist in defraying plaintiffs’ legal costs in over 100 cases.

Our second fundraiser to help with these efforts this year is the “South Shore Dinner Club” coupon book.  This book has coupons to over 40 local restaurants as well as other valuable coupons.  Cost of the book is $24, from which we receive $10 for our EF and LAF projects.  It will be available at the end of October.

Please call Ruthanne Kennedy and reserve your book and help us with another fun-filled way to raise money to enhance our Educational and Legal Advocacy Funds.

MEMBERSHIP MATTERS

Roll out the welcome mat for our three newest members:  Cathy Barnes, Jo Loughnane, and Sondra Schmidt.  All three joined at our very successful Pot Luck Dinner and each was able to take advantage of the Shape the Future discount for “joining on the spot.”  The names of their recruiters will be added to the Member-Get-a-Member Hall of Fame on the national website.  Please continue to recruit members for our branch.  This month’s program is the perfect opportunity to invite friends interested in travel opportunities and how travel can extend our lifelong learning. The topic is so appropriate for the newly retired or those about to retire. So pick up the phone and issue an invitation.  Should you would prefer to send a postcard invitation to prospective members to find out more about AAUW (either print or email), they are available.  Hollie and Sheila have a supply of printed postcards.  E-cards can be found in the Member Center   http://www.aauw.org/member_center/postcards/MGM.cfm.  Pat Bologna, Hollie Bagley, Sheila Doherty, Ruthanne Kennedy and new member Beatrice Kelly have already helped to contribute to our branch growth this year.  Let’s keep the spurt going!  Remember, YOU are the key to AAUW’s future.

By now each of you should have received your 2006 Directory with its bright yellow cover.  If you did not get yours, let Sheila or Hollie know.

ChitChat:  Another of the AAUW extended family has been added to the ranks of the married.  Congratulations to Steve Gregoire, son of Chris Gregoire, who was married on May 6th.  Jane Street sent her greetings to all from Martha’s Vineyard for a successful AAUW year.  She will not be back until after the next meeting, but she wanted us to know she is thinking about us.  Be sure to ask her how she did in the annual fishing tournament.  Retirement is treating Ginny Giordano well.  She and her husband are now off to explore our country’s national parks including Mount Rushmore, the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone.  Congratulations to Pat Granahan for representing AAUW at the Hingham Selectmen’s Meeting during which they voted to establish a town energy committee.  Pat has been instrumental in pushing for alternative energy measures since the 1980’s.  Let’s hope her efforts finally pay off (for Hingham, at least).  You may read more about our branch supporting the energy committee in an article published in the Hingham Journal on the Hingham Area Branch web page under Press Releases on the AAUW-MA website. And while you are reading Press Releases check out the fabulous column, AAUW Corner, written by Kay Campbell.  What a way to spread the news about AAUW!  Kudos, Kay.  All of us appreciate it.  And thanks are also due to our publicity chair, Sharon Lemoff, for arranging with the Hingham Journal for our branch to have a monthly column.  Way to go, Sharon!  And speaking of the web page, new member Sondra Schmidt found us through the web page.  Continue to send us information to be included in ChitChat.  Don’t force us to make something up about you!

Sheila and Hollie

Potluck Follow-up

If anyone is missing a blue dish, Sheila has it.  She will bring it to the November meeting or you can arrange with her to pick it up.

Our No Sweat Project

Thanks to all of you who contributed personal grooming items (“mini” or regular) at Potluck.

I will continue to collect them all year, so whenever they begin to pile up, just bring them to a meeting and I will see that they reach those who need them.                              Hollie
