PRESIDENT’S LETTER

The weather has turned cool a little early this late summer, a signal that AAUW’s program year, and our September Potluck Dinner are just around the corner. Your board has been working hard over the last couple of months to organize a first-rate series of topics for branch meetings that will help you de-clutter your life, learn while traveling, improve your nutrition and coach yourself in leadership skills. The interest groups are organizing their first meetings, and we’re gearing up for another year.

Over the summer Pat Bologna took office as State President, and it was wonderful to see her run the State Meeting in June at Hingham’s Derby Academy. Thanks to all who volunteered to help make that a well-run meeting. Also, kudo’s to Hollie Bagley, Sheila Doherty and Ginny Giordano for working hard to get everyone to renew their memberships on time. We are starting out the year with 40 members – well positioned to grow even more.

At Potluck, we’ll have a special guest, out-going State President Patricia Ho, who is now focusing on connecting the branches with the public policy issues that were voted on at the last convention. As a result of the surveys and discussions that members held at state and branch levels last year throughout the country, it’s evident that the branches need to know what’s happening on the national level. After all, we all voted for it!

Please help us launch our 2006-7 program year at the Potluck Dinner, at the Allerton House in Hingham on Tuesday September 12, 2006 at 6:30. Bring your own place-setting of cutlery and dishes if you like, or use the paper plates provided.

Ø      Bring a friend; someone who’s new in town or going through a transition, a young mother who would like a break from her daily routine, or a good friend who would enjoy a FREE night out for dinner with interesting women from the South Shore;

Ø      Meet our new members in person and welcome them to the branch;

Ø      Learn about the first-rate programs planned for this year;

Ø      Sign up for interest groups.

Please contact Sheila Doherty by September 9th to tell her what you’ll be bringing, and if you’ll have a guest with you. She can be reached at: 781-267-1098 (her cell phone) or e-mail: sheilad1234@usadatanet.net

I look forward to seeing everyone on September 12th.

                                                                                                             Kay Campbell, President

Book Swap!

Once again, at Pot Luck we’ll hold an informal book swap to raise funds for the Recognition Award. Simply bring four books to give away. You may buy any books that are contributed for $1 each. The only rule is that you have to take any of your unsold books home with you at the end of the night.

INTEREST GROUPS

Are you interested in forming a new one?  So far, we have Girls’ Game Night, The Writer’s Group, and Adventures in Dining. The first meetings will be announced at Potluck. Do you have an idea for a new group?  Bring ideas for a group with you to Potluck and talk to other members. All you have to do is propose a group at a branch meeting and hopefully you’ll attract others who are interested in taking part.  We have had prospective members asking whether we have a Book Group. Is there anyone interested in getting one going? If so, please contact Kay (781-740-0788 or kaycam@aol.com).

HAPPY 125TH  BIRTHDAY!

 AAUW is 125 years old this year. Get ready for lots of opportunities for the organization to gain recognition and visibility on the national, state and local levels.

MEMBERSHIP MATTERS

We have the distinct pleasure to announce that for the first time in recent memory we are starting off our AAUW year with the same number of members we ended with – 40.  Please welcome new members:

                                    Cathy Gabriel, Julie Doherty and Lynn Howard

Complete information for them will be found in the 2006-2007 branch directory which will be distributed at

Potluck.  Cathy attended our May banquet with friend Pat Bologna.  Julie is Sheila’s daughter-in-law, and Lynn is a friend of Ruthanne Kennedy.

The Hingham Area Branch knows that personal recruitment is the key to new members.  The Association recognizes that fact as well and has launched a new membership campaign:  AAUW KEYS TO THE FUTURE: A MEMBER-GET-A MEMBER CAMPAIGN.  The primary KEY to the future of AAUW is PERSONAL INVOLVEMENT.  You, as an AAUW member, are in the best position to identify and recruit new members.  As we begin a year-long celebration of AAUW’s 125th Anniversary, we encourage every AAUW member to make the personal commitment to recruit at least one new member for AAUW.  The strength of AAUW for the next 125 years is dependent on the commitment of its current members to work to assure that strength.  The campaign offers incentives and rewards for recruiters, their branches and their states.  Of course, the Hingham Area Branch plans to be one of those “top” branches so we challenge each and every one of you to reach out to one person you know would benefit from AAUW membership.  If ever you thought you should recruit a member, now is the time to act.  One of the best ways to recruit would be to invite a prospective member to Pot Luck where he/she will have a chance to meet other members and hear about our programs and plans for the year.  For each person you recruit you become eligible to participate in a drawing for an expense paid trip to the 2009 Association convention.  You will be hearing and experiencing other incentives as the year progresses.  You may read more about the MGM campaign on the Association website in the Member Center.  There is a link to the campaign information on the landing page.  See a photo of our own Pat Bologna meeting the challenge of recruitment.  Click on the e-postcard link and immediately invite someone to join!  What an exciting AAUW year we will have as we see our membership continuing to multiply.  We are counting on your personal commitment.

Chit Chat:

 Ruth Powell, our newsletter editor, traveled to Belgium and celebrated a big birthday this summer.  Ruth’s husband was of Flemish descent, and he and Ruth visited Belgium several times, touring and doing genealogy.  This summer his three nieces wanted to go and see their ancestral home and they asked Ruth to come along.  There were eleven of them - three nieces, three husbands, four grandnieces and nephews and Ruth.  They arrived in Brussels from Texas, Michigan, Brooklyn, Kazakhstan, Chicago, and Braintree and had a wonderful time exploring in Ghent, Bruges, Bassevelde, St. Lauriens, Aalter, and other places in Flanders where the Powells, Christiaens, DeSplinters, Timmermans and others came from.  It turned into a combination of family reunion and touring.  Because Ruth still has vestiges of French and German she became the official translator - young people today learn Spanish!  All gained a lot of knowledge of history and family relations - and ate well and drank some very good beer. When she came home Ruth celebrated her 80th birthday!!!  What a memorable summer!

We hope that each of you had a chance to relax and enjoy the pleasures of summer.  We would love to hear what you did on “your summer vacation” or any other news about you to share with other members.  Don’t be shy about your accomplishments (or those of your family).  We would like to hear from you so that Chit Chat can continue.  Next month let’s see how many far-away places were visited by our members.  We know San Diego, Washington DC and Alaska were popular destinations.

Wedding bells are ringing for Peter Giordano.  Best wishes!  Congratulations are also in order for Chrisanne Gregoire who has been elected chairwoman of the Hingham School Committee... Congratulations!  Anyone else have family who joined the married ranks?  New babies?  If you don’t have news about yourself, send news about another member.  Send your chit chat to Hollie (hollie@gallivan.org) or Sheila (sheilad1234@usadatanet.net).

 We extend our deepest sympathy to Sue Pace and Kay Campbell on the loss of their mothers and to Anne Foley on the loss of her brother.

A FEEL-GOOD NO-SWEAT MINIATURE PROJECT

·         Have you ever wondered what to do with those personal size shampoos, lotions and soaps supplied to you in hotel rooms?

·         Do you ever buy soap, shampoo, deodorant or lotion only to get it home and decide it’s not right for you?

·         Does your dentist oversupply you with toothbrushes and toothpaste?

·         How about all those grooming gifts that just aren’t your scent?

These items would be greatly appreciated by people living in homeless shelters. Bring to an AAUW meeting any personal grooming items (can be opened, but nearly full) you would like to donate and give them to Hollie Bagley or Sheila Doherty.  Hollie’s neighbor who works with the homeless in South Boston will see that her needy clients get them.
