Coaching Yourself to Leadership

Presentation of Pamela J. Lincoln Recognition Award

Hingham, March 28, 2007 ---- Massachusetts author Ginny O’Brien will present “Coaching Yourself to Leadership” on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 at the Hingham Public Library at 7PM. She will discuss the principles of her recent book of the same title, which is based on her experience as an executive and corporate coach. Copies of the book will be available for sale.

The event is being sponsored by the Hingham Area Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and Buttonwood Books and Toys of Cohasset. In addition to Ms. O’Brien’s appearance, the evening will include the presentation of the 2007 Pamela J. Lincoln Recognition Award that AAUW gives each year to an outstanding senior graduating from a South Shore high school. The public is invited.

Ms. O’Brien bases her book on her successful coaching model’s five core areas of development: authenticity, vision and strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, assertive communication, and the ability to build and nurture strategic relationships.

These concepts are relevant to adults at every stage in life who want to be the best they can be, whether they in business, or are parents, teachers, artists, volunteers, or retirees.

“Leadership applies to anything that you do in life,” O’Brien says. “Many of the issues are the same, in terms of being authentic, showing up, truly, to who you are, recognizing your strengths and being able to leverage those strengths, and having a vision for what you want to have happen for yourself. And no matter what you do in life, it’s important for you to be emotionally intelligent and assertive.”

Parents in particular, should take note. “Leadership and parenting require the same basic skill set,” she continues. “Both are about helping people to develop themselves, to create vision, to give them guidance and direction, while at the same time allowing them to make their own mistakes and to learn themselves. My clients tell me that they are better parents after having gone through coaching.”

In addition to Coaching Yourself to Leadership, Ginny is the author of Success on Our Own Terms: Tales of Extraordinary, Ordinary Business Women (John Wiley, 1998; and The Fast Forward MBA in Business (John Wiley, 1996).  She has been featured in major newspapers and magazines, including O, The Oprah Magazine, and has appeared on regional and national radio and TV shows.

In 1998, Ginny founded the Columbia Consultancy, a firm that helps clients to develop their leadership skills, enhance performance, and to find success on their own terms.  Her goal is to help others learn how to get to the heart of issues quickly so they can make choices with greater clarity, change their behaviors, and achieve their goals.
