"Because equity is

still an issue."

February 9 -- Women Artists or Artists Who Are Women?

Serving the South Shore of Massachusetts from Quincy to Plymouth

AAUW advances equity for  women and girls through advocacy, education and research.  AAUW values and seeks a diverse membership.  There shall be no barriers to full participation in this organization on the basis of gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, or class.  We welcome you to join our branch.

The Hingham Area Branch of AAUW is the South Shore’s leading advocate for education and equity for all women and girls. We seek and welcome new members from Quincy to Plymouth holding an associate or equivalent or baccalaureate or higher degree from an accredited institution.

The Hingham Area branch of meets monthly from September through May usually on the evening of the second Tuesday of the month at various locations convenient to the wide area covered by our membership.  Our programs relate to AAUW's mission to promote equity for women and girls, lifelong education and positive societal change.

We engage in fundraising to support AAUW's Educational Foundation, the world's largest source of funding exclusively for graduate women and the Legal Advocacy Fund, the nation's largest legal fund focused solely on sex discrimination in higher education.

2009 -2010 Dues

Branch dues are $75 annually beginning July 1.  Dues are $49 to the national association, $15 to the state and $11 to the branch.  Dues include subscriptions to the Outlook, the BayStater and the News of Note.  Student affiliates are exempt from branch dues, but must join the national association ($17) and the state ($8).

2009 Recognition

Award Winner

On the local level, the Hingham Area branch encourages women in education by offering a local recognition award to a female pursuing or continuing education after high school.  The award is given in April of each year; applications are due on March 1.  For more information on the Recognition Award, please contact

Beatrice Kelly

The Hingham Area branch also sponsors Study and Special Interest Groups. Study Groups may be formed to allow for a more in-depth exploration of a particular topic or for a more informal presentation of a timely topic than might otherwise occur at a branch meeting. Special Interest Groups, open only to AAUW members, include book discussion, adventures in dining, a writers group, a game night, and a decluttering group. Groups generally meet in homes and are announced in the monthly branch bulletin. Check with one of our program VP for information on our current interest group activities.

We seek and welcome new members among graduates who hold an associate or equivalent or a baccalaureate or higher degree from a college or university.  Undergraduates may join the branch as AAUW student affiliates.  We practice AAUW's diversity statement:  There shall be no barriers to full participation in this organization on the basis of gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, disability or class.

We welcome new members from the South Shore! For more information about how to join,  please contact either of our Membership Vice President, Pat Laidler or Patricia McKay (781-337-3375).

Women Artists or Artists Who Are Women?

What artist had to sue to prosecute another famous artist for rape in 1612?  Learn who was the first woman to be admitted to the Dutch Painters Guild in 1633. She also had the audacity to accept three male students. Who had to apply for permission from the town fathers to wear male attire in order to go about the woods and fields to sketch and paint in 1845?  What artist created disturbing paintings as a result of emotional turmoil after finding out her famous husband slept with her sister?

Find out more about famous and successful women artists who were the breadwinners for their households from 1500’s to now.  Deanne Noiseux with a MS in Art Education from Mass Art, educator for 25 years, and AAUW member will present an hour talk and discussion about  women in the arts.

Programs and Events 2009-2010

The Hingham Area Branch just completed its 41st year as part of the American Association of University Women.  AAUW members believe in the power of education to change women’s lives. We also recognize that women’s education means not only attaining higher degrees. It also means becoming financially literate, daring to take risks to grow and learn throughout our lives, and to help others both around us and far away from us to reach their potential.

Our programs this year will primarily focus on women and power, and we hope you will join us at one of our events as we explore its many facets.  No matter how busy your daily routine is, we think you’ll get something out of our events. You’ll meet like-minded women from the South Shore, we’ll hear from fascinating speakers on thought-provoking topics. In addition, we hope to collaborate with our sister branches in an action project.

For more information about our meeting topics and speakers, please contact Program Vice President Carol Sullivan-Hanley.
Expand your horizons and potential.  Come to our monthly meetings, bring a neighbor, friend or colleague!

Remember, AAUW advances equity for all women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research--because equity is still an issue.

We look forward to seeing you!
